Become a Master at Overcoming Hard Moments
This is the sign of a champion!
Have you ever faced a disappointment in business or in an activity you were trying to find great accomplishment in… and that disappointment compounded with another disappointment and maybe another to where you felt stuck, frustrated, or just plain angry or ready to give up? The negative energy kicks in and you find yourself wondering… “What is the point in even trying?!”
For example, you had a big business goal or money target you wanted to hit and you worked extremely hard…but you didn’t make it?
Or you competed in a sport and fell way short of where you wanted to place?
You may even find it in a relationship where you are trying to make a difference but it seems like nothing you do is working?
Today we are going to dive in and discuss how to reset your mindset quickly so you can go forward and win at your highest level at whatever you are doing. The best in the world aren’t the best because they always win. The best in the world are actually at the top because they are standing on a mountain of failures! They are the best because they have lost over and over and over again… but they have learned how to deal with it.
Mindset Reset Truths from Roger Federer, the Number One Tennis Player in History with 237 Consecutive Weeks at Number One! 🎾
A few weeks ago we discussed how much easier and lighter it is to approach life like a video game. When you approach life this way, the setbacks and failures you experience are simply just you attempting to level up - not a major emotional roller coaster ride that makes you want to throw up or something that begins to define you. If you lose, you simply try again and again until you learn the system and level up! |
This week we stumbled across a short address by Roger Federer on Instagram and found so many gold nuggets in it to help us get out of our own way and continue to show up with intensity and focus in whatever we are doing… we couldn’t wait to share it with you!
Here is what he had to say with a ‘lil of our own viewpoints on it mixed in.
First: Perfection is Impossible…or Is It?
Perfection is impossible. We’re human - not robots. But for some reason we think we need to be perfect or we aren’t ever “good enough.”
In Roger Federer’s world, in the 1,526 singles matches he played in his career he won almost 80% of those matches; however, he only won 54% of the points in those matches. In other words, even top-ranked tennis players in the world win barely half of the points they play! When you are only winning every other point or so on average you have to learn not to dwell on every shot. You teach yourself to think, “It’s only a point.” Every shot, whether it’s an enormous failure or a massive win that makes it to ESPN’s top ten playlist is still just a point.
One of our favorite statements on perfection comes from Celine Dion in her “I Am Celine Dion” documentary. She said something to the effect that she loves doing live shows because that is where imperfections happen and it allows her to engage in a dance with humanity. So good!
We’re gonna dig deep here now…sit down if you need to! Haha! Ready? If a mark of our humanity is imperfection, then you could say being imperfect is actually being a perfect human… right?!
Second: When You Are Playing a Point It Has to Be the Most Important Thing in the World
You’ve got to be able to let the last point go (or the last effort in whatever you were doing) because what is currently in front of you has to be the most important thing in the world. And it is!
But when it’s behind you, it’s behind you.
This mindset is absolutely crucial because it frees you to fully commit to the next point and the next point after that with intensity, clarity, and focus.
For example, Bart was in a pickleball tournament and they were down by 10 points - TEN! The opposing team only needed one more point to win. We don’t know about you, but that is often when you throw your hands up in the air and declare “game over.” But not Bart! Bart and his teammate took it one point at a time, one shot at a time, and they came back and won the match. It’s never over until it’s over… and at the same time, you’ve got to focus on what is in front of you and nothing else.
The truth is, whatever game you play in life, sometimes you’re going to lose. Whether it’s a point, a match, a failed Facebook ad campaign, a failed webinar conversion rate, a failed relationship, a failed product launch, and so on. Life seems to be this way by design. Nobody we know wins at everything - we wouldn’t grow as humans if we didn’t face challenges and failures. Life is an emotional roller coaster with many ups and downs and it’s natural when you’re down to doubt yourself or feel sorry for yourself. The truth is, everyone around you feels the same way - even those who are at the top.
But negative energy is wasted energy. And energy is everything.
“You want to become a master at overcoming hard moments. This is the sign of a champion. The best in the world are not the best because they win every point. It’s because they know they lose again and again and have learned how to deal with it. You accept it, cry it out if you need to, and then force a smile. You move on. Be relentless. Adapt and grow. Work harder. Work smarter.”

What we’re reading this week!
This book dives into the connection between the mind and the body and how what might be manifesting as pain in our bodies is actually unrecognized and unreleased emotions. If you have chronic anything that you haven’t been able to find an answer for, this book is worth taking a look at! |
